Harrow Council leader issues message to residents as covid-19 cases continue to rise

Harrow Council Leader Graham Henson has posted a message to residents as covid-19 cases continue to rise in the borough.

England is in the middle of a second national lockdown which will last until at least December 2. Over 54,000 people have died with the virus in the UK.

There has been 463 new confirmed cases of Coronavirus in Harrow within the last week.

A message from Leader Cllr Graham Henson said: “Traditionally at this time of year we are meeting with friends, family and communities as part of the festive season and preparing for Christmas and New Year celebrations.

“After two weeks of another lockdown it is hard to comprehend how life has changed for so many.

“We are seeing an increase in Covid cases, particularly in the over-60s, and we need to make sure people are following the rules to keep themselves and loved ones safe.

“There are two weeks left to make a difference and work together to try to emerge from lockdown into Tier 2.

“But in order to achieve this, we need everyone on board, we must keep following the PHE advice, we must slow down the spread of this terrible virus.

“We must not mix with other households indoors, cover your face when necessary and it is essential to continue to follow the hands, face, space mantra:

• Wash your hands, or use hand sanitiser, regularly and for at least 20 seconds

• Cover your face, when using public transport or in busy spaces like high streets or shops where it may be more difficult to keep your distance

• Keep a safe distance from anyone not in your household or support bubble.

“The Government has introduced fines for breaking the rules – starting at £200, rising up to £6,400.  People holding large gatherings face fines of up to £10,000 and could be prosecuted.

“This is a difficult and worrying time for our communities, residents and businesses.  Thank you all for your continued understanding and efforts to protect the lives of Harrow people. Working together, following the guidance, we can get through this, and life can return to some normality.

“Please stay safe and take every precaution to do so.”
